Trench Coat Manufacturer Brief: Cloth, Storm Flap, Belt and Sleeve Lines for Your Label

Quick answer: A suit factory can make a trench coat for your label when the brief fixes the cloth and its finish, the front (double or single breasted), the storm flap, the back yoke, the belt and cuff straps, the sleeve type and the lining, because each of those parts changes the pattern and the sewing. Send a reference photo with every detail named, the cloth reference with its composition and finish, and the length, then judge the coat on a person, belted and open, on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send a reference photo and the cloth reference on WhatsApp.

The trench coat is the coat most menswear brands want in an outerwear range, and the one tailor shops are asked for when a client already owns the overcoat. It is also easy to get wrong. Every flap, strap and buckle on a trench started as a working part, and when they are copied without a reason the coat looks like dress-up. When they are briefed as working parts, in a cloth that behaves, the coat looks deliberate and wears for a long time.

Can a suit factory make a trench coat for my label?

Yes, if the coat is briefed as tailored outerwear rather than as a rain jacket. A trench is cut and sewn much like an overcoat: a shaped front, a set-in or raglan sleeve, a collar that stands, a lining and pressed edges. What is different is the cloth, which is usually a dense cotton or a gabardine, and the number of detail parts. A factory used to tailored coats handles the shape; the brief has to name every detail so nothing is guessed. Cloth finishes such as water repellency belong to the cloth itself, so they are confirmed on the cloth reference and on WhatsApp, not promised by the factory.

The trench detail lines

  • Front: double or single breasted, button count written as a word — it changes the pattern and the overlap.

  • Storm flap: on the right front, buttoned or sewn, or none — it covers the front opening at the shoulder.

  • Back yoke: a yoke over the shoulders, or none — it sheds water off the back.

  • Collar: a stand collar with a throat latch, or plain — it closes the neck in weather.

  • Epaulettes: buttoned shoulder straps, or none — a style detail that is easy to omit.

  • Belt: a self-cloth belt with buckle and belt loops at the sides — it shapes the waist when closed.

  • Cuff straps: strap and buckle at each sleeve, or none — they close the cuff.

  • Sleeve: set-in or raglan — it changes the shoulder look and fit.

  • Pockets: slanted welt pockets with flaps — hands go in from the front.

  • Lining: full, half, or a check lining — it sets the weight and wearing season.

  • Length: written relative to the knee on the client or fit model — short, knee or long trench.

Which cloth suits a trench coat?

Dense, tightly woven cloths: cotton gabardine, cotton twill, wool gabardine or a blend. They should hold a crisp edge, press well and drape without clinging. A suiting gabardine is lighter than a coat gabardine; the suit-cloth notes are in the wool gabardine brief. Write the cloth reference, the composition as printed and any finish named on the cloth, and send a daylight photo; which cloths can be supplied for your order is confirmed on WhatsApp. For a coat range in heavier wool, the covert coat brief is the better start.

Set-in or raglan sleeve?

A set-in sleeve gives a cleaner, more tailored shoulder and suits a slimmer trench worn over a suit. A raglan sleeve runs in one piece to the collar, gives a softer, sloping shoulder and more room to move, and sits easily over a jacket. Choose one per style and write it; a raglan pattern is a different pattern, not an adjustment. Over-a-suit sizing is the same question as for any overcoat; see overcoat measurement deltas.

Where does a trench sample go wrong?

  • Too many parts, none working. Epaulettes, gun flap, D-rings and cuff straps on a slim coat look like a costume. Keep the parts the customer will use.

  • Belt sitting at the wrong height. Write where the belt loops sit relative to the natural waist on the fit model.

  • Storm flap pulling. If the flap is sewn too tight it drags the front; check it with the arms forward.

  • Collar that will not stand. The throat latch and the undercollar need enough body to close the neck.

  • Hem flaring or dropping. Dense cottons need a straight grain at the hem and a clean vent.

  • Lining too short in the vent. Check the lining at the back vent with the coat buttoned and walking.

A worked note

"Brand ref A-12. Trench coat, double breasted, button count six (written as a word on the tech pack). Cotton gabardine, cloth reference and daylight photo attached, finish as printed on the cloth. Right storm flap buttoned. Back yoke. Stand collar with throat latch. Self belt with buckle, belt loops at side seams at natural waist. Cuff straps with buckles. Set-in sleeve. Slanted welt pockets with flaps. Check lining, full. Length just below the knee on the fit model."

At the sample

  1. Belted: does the belt sit at the waist and gather the front evenly?

  2. Open: does the front hang straight, with the storm flap flat?

  3. Arms forward: does the back yoke or shoulder pull?

  4. Collar up with the throat latch: does the neck close without strain?

  5. Photograph front, side and back, belted and open; write corrections in words.

Which track fits a trench coat?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: one client's trench coat cut to his measurements, worn over a jacket or a shirt, with the length written on his order.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's trench coat in a size run, with every detail part fixed on the sealed sample and the same cloth reference planned for the run.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. Bulk outerwear programmes are on our suit manufacturer China page, and the single-client route for shops on our made to measure suit factory page.

Single or double breasted? Double breasted is the classic trench; single breasted reads cleaner over a suit. Choose one per style.
