Teba Jacket for Men: Briefing a Shirt-Collar Soft Jacket for MTM or Your Label

Quick answer: A teba jacket is a soft, unstructured jacket from Spain with a shirt-type collar instead of notched lapels, patch pockets and little or no padding or lining, so the brief has to fix the collar, the front closure, the shoulder, the pockets, the inside finish and a cloth that holds its shape without canvas. Send a reference photo with the collar and pockets named, the cloth reference and the lining choice, then judge the sample with the collar both up and down. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send a reference photo and the cloth reference on WhatsApp.

The teba has moved from Spanish country estates into the wardrobes of clients who want a jacket that feels like a shirt and still looks dressed. It is popular with MTM boutiques whose clients have enough suits and want something softer, and with brands building a casual tailoring line. Its charm is how little is inside it. That is also where samples go wrong: too much structure and it is a sport coat; too little care and it looks unfinished.

What is a teba jacket?

It is a jacket with a shirt-type collar: the collar and a short lapel run into each other without a notch, so the collar can be worn down, open, or turned up and closed at the throat. The front usually closes with three buttons. Pockets are patch pockets, and there is often no breast pocket or a small patch one. Inside, there is no padding and little or no canvas, and the jacket is unlined or lightly lined. The shoulder follows the body. Traditional cloths are tweed, flannel and heavier wools in winter, linen and cotton in summer.

Teba next to a sport coat

Same table as a list

  • Collar: a shirt-type collar with no notch that can be worn up — a sport coat has a notch or peak lapel.

  • Front: three buttons, often rolling to the top — a sport coat has two or three buttons.

  • Shoulder: natural, with no padding — a sport coat has light or regular padding.

  • Chest: no canvas or a very light one — a sport coat has a canvas or fused front.

  • Lining: unlined or quarter-lined — a sport coat is fully or half lined.

  • Pockets: patch pockets — a sport coat has flap or jetted pockets, sometimes patch.

How do you keep it soft without it looking unfinished?

Three things. The cloth has to hold some shape on its own, so a firm tweed, flannel or a substantial linen works better than a light, floppy worsted. The inside has to be finished cleanly, because it is seen: bound or neatly finished seams, facings wide enough to look deliberate. And the collar needs just enough body to stand when turned up and lie flat when down. Unlined construction is covered in unlined and half-lined jackets, and a natural, unpadded shoulder in the sack suit brief.

The brief lines

  • Collar: "shirt-type teba collar, no notch; throat tab or hidden button to close when worn up" if wanted.

  • Front: button count written as a word, roll point.

  • Shoulder: "natural, no padding".

  • Chest: "no canvas" or "light chest piece".

  • Lining: unlined or quarter-lined; seams bound.

  • Pockets: patch pockets, with or without a breast pocket; see pocket styles.

  • Cloth: reference and composition as printed; supply confirmed on WhatsApp.

A knit alternative for the same soft look is in the jersey blazer brief.

A worked note

"Client ref A-12. Teba jacket, brown tweed, cloth reference attached. Shirt-type collar, no notch, hidden throat button to close when worn up. Three buttons, roll to the top button. Natural shoulder, no padding, no canvas. Quarter-lined, seams bound in a matching tape. Patch hip pockets, no breast pocket."

At the sample

  1. Collar down: does it lie flat and roll evenly?

  2. Collar up and closed: does it stand, and close at the throat?

  3. Inside: are the seams and facings clean enough to be seen?

  4. Shoulder: does it follow the body with no ridge or drop?

  5. Photograph front, side and back with the collar up and down; write corrections in words.

Which track fits a teba jacket?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: one client's teba cut to his measurements, with the collar, closure and lining on his order.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's teba in a size run, with the collar, inside finish and cloth fixed on the sealed sample.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The single-client route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page, and how an unlined jacket moves through cutting, sewing and finishing on our process page.
