New suit brands usually start their factory search with the same phrase: low MOQ. It is a sensible filter — nobody wants to fill a warehouse before the first customer has tried a jacket on — but the phrase hides more than it reveals. A minimum order quantity is a count of something, and suppliers do not all count the same thing.
This post is for founders and buyers planning a first private-label suit style. It explains the words, then shows a first-season plan built around a real minimum.
Five MOQ words and the question behind each
"MOQ 50": could be per style, per colour or per order. Ask which.
"Low MOQ": anything from one piece to a few hundred. Ask for the number and what it counts.
"No MOQ": often single made-to-order pieces. Ask whether one-piece orders are cut to measurements or taken from stock.
"MOQ per colour": each colourway must reach the minimum alone. Ask what two colours need.
"Mixed sizes allowed": sizes inside one style count together. Ask how the minimum may split across sizes.
Our two numbers, stated plainly
We run two tracks. MTM from 1: one garment cut to one person's measurements. Bulk from 50 per style: a graded run of one sealed style. How those 50 may split across colours and sizes is agreed in writing before cutting — the details are in colourway split rules for bulk from 50.
Clocks do not change with the track: sample 7–14 days, production 14–21 days, counted after measurements or size specs, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days.
A first-season plan for a new brand
A founder wants to launch with a navy two-piece suit in eight sizes. A plan that respects a 50-piece minimum without guessing demand:
Sample one style in the cloth and construction you intend to sell. Judge it on a real body. Our sample policy explains what approval (sealing) means.
Use MTM from 1 while you learn. Early customers who sit outside your size range can be served one garment at a time, cut to measurements, without adding a size to the bulk run.
Run bulk from 50 once the sample is sealed, with a size curve weighted to the sizes your first customers actually wear.
Reorder against the same sealed sample rather than reopening the pattern each season.
The point of the plan: the minimum is met by one style you have tested, not by five styles you hope will sell.
When a lower number is the wrong number
A very low minimum can mean the garment is taken from existing stock and relabelled, or that the supplier is a reseller adding a margin. Neither is wrong, but both change what you own: the pattern, the cloth choice, the fit. If the brand is meant to have its own fit, ask who holds the pattern and whether the sample you approve is the reference for bulk.
