Sorting a fault — confirming it was made in the workshop rather than in transit — is step one. Step two is choosing what to do about it. Most disputes between shops and factories are not about whether something went wrong; they are about which remedy fits, and that choice is easier when both sides know the options in advance.
There are three usual remedies for a confirmed factory fault: remake the garment, reduce the amount owed, or issue a credit note against a future order. Each has a cost in time as well as money.
The three remedies side by side
Remake: fits when the garment cannot be sold or worn as is and the client still needs it. Costs a new production run. Write down which pieces, what changes and when the remake clock starts.
Price reduction: fits when the garment is usable after a local fix or sold as is. No time cost. Write down which pieces, the agreed reduction and the reason.
Credit note: fits when you will order again and prefer value on the next order. Deferred. Write down the amount or basis, which future order it applies to, and any expiry.
We do not publish percentages for reductions or credits. They depend on the fault, the garment and what it costs your shop to fix; they are agreed per case on the thread.
Two worked examples
MTM from 1, one client suit, sleeve cut 3 cm long. The client's event is in three weeks. A local tailor can shorten the sleeves the next day. Remedy: price reduction to cover the local alteration. A remake would take a new 14–21 day production run plus freight, cutting too close to the event.
Bulk from 50, three of fifty jackets with a pocket set crooked. The other forty-seven are fine and already on the rail. Remedy: remake of three pieces against the same sealed sample, or a credit note on the next run if the shop would rather sell the three as seconds. Either way, the record names the three pieces by size and carton.
A remake runs on the production clock
A remake is production. Production takes 14–21 days and starts when the remake order is locked — measurements, cloth and construction confirmed, which may mean waiting for cloth if the original lot is used up. Production days are not delivery days; freight follows. Samples, where a new one is needed, take 7–14 days. The difference between remaking and altering an MTM garment is covered in remake vs alteration terms; the evidence that makes a claim quick is in the post-delivery evidence pack. If the problem started with a damaged carton, sort it first using transit damage vs factory fault.
Writing the remedy down
Whatever you choose, close the case with one message both sides confirm: the pieces, the fault, the remedy, and — for credit — the order it applies to. The steps around it are on our process page; MTM client orders are described on our made to measure suit factory page.
