When Custom Tailor Shops Should Not Use Factory MTM — And What to Do Instead

Factory MTM is a tool, not a religion. Some orders belong in your back room; some belong on a graded bulk PO; some should not be accepted at the consult. Shops that force every ticket through a China MTM path create remakes, missed dates and clients who think "MTM" means same-week magic.

This boundary note is for overseas custom tailor shops considering Shi Yuan Suit Factory in Baodi, Tianjin. Who we serve generally: who Shi Yuan serves. How boutique MTM runs: how we work.

Use factory MTM when these are true

  • You can wait for sample (when needed) plus production after approval — our windows are sample 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after written approval, plus freight.
  • Measurements are complete and trusted (in-store or a disciplined remote form).
  • The client accepts that fit iteration happens across sample / shop fitting, not overnight.
  • Cloth is available (stock or confirmed indent).

MTM from 1 is real on our side — but "from 1" does not mean "from tomorrow."

Do not use factory MTM when…

SituationBetter path
Wedding in 10 days, no sealed style, no clothLocal rush make or honest decline
Client needs five fit iterations on one jacket before they will payLocal basted fitting culture — factory MTM is the wrong instrument
You only need length and waist on a stock garment you already holdIn-house alteration
Volume is identical units for a corporate closetGraded bulk from 50, not 50 separate MTM tickets
Measurements are a voice note with no numbersFix the brief first; do not start the factory clock
You want to experiment on construction every single clientSeal a house style first; experiment on samples, not on paying rush clients

Alteration-heavy shops: a special case

If your business model is "sell a base, alter heavily in-house," factory MTM may be overkill. Consider unfinished hems and generous outlets on a private-label base (see today's unfinished-hem post once published, plus seam allowance), or true MTM only for clients outside your alteration range.

Do not buy factory MTM and then fully rip the garment apart — you paid twice.

Wholesale / graded path as the alternative

When the ticket is really "same style, many bodies that fit a size chart," use graded bulk from 50 with unfinished hems and outlets, then alter locally. That is often faster and cheaper than fifty MTM files. Factory MTM shines when bodies or style details fall outside the chart — not when the chart would have worked.

How to say no at the consult

A useful script: "For this date and this brief, factory MTM will not protect the wedding / event. Options are local make, a sealed style only if cloth is here, or moving the delivery expectation." Saying that early keeps the deposit honest.

When we are the right factory MTM partner

Recurring boutique clients, sealed house styles, planned wedding parties with calendar discipline, and private-label programs that sample before launch. Those are the tickets we want. Random same-week miracles are not.

What we will tell you on the first WhatsApp

If the dates or the brief do not fit factory MTM, we say so. We would rather lose a rush ticket than take a deposit into a calendar that cannot work. Sample rules: sample policy. Program shape: private label / MTM.

Worked example (hypothetical)

A Chicago shop took a four-person wedding party with the ceremony in three weeks and no sealed cloth. They asked for factory MTM. We declined the full party, offered a sealed navy style only if cloth was on our shelf that day (it was not), and suggested they keep two jackets local. They kept the relationship; a forced yes would have burned it.

Ask us "does this ticket fit?" before you take the deposit

Send country, monthly volume, the date, and whether you think it is MTM or bulk. We reply with fit / no-fit.

Fit-iteration culture vs factory MTM

Some shops sell a basted-fitting experience with three try-ons. Factory MTM is a different product: measure carefully, sample when needed, produce, then alter lightly in-store. If your brand promise is endless basting, keep that work local. Use us for sealed house styles and planned MTM where the brief is stable.

Deposit ethics

Taking a deposit on a date the factory path cannot meet is how reviews get written. If we say no-fit on WhatsApp, use that as cover at the consult — "our factory partner flagged the calendar" — and offer a real alternative. Clients respect a boundary more than a missed delivery.

Quick decision tree

Date impossible + no sealed cloth → local or decline. Same style × many chart-fitting bodies → graded bulk from 50. Stable brief + available cloth + calendar fits sample/production windows → factory MTM. Everything else → ask us on WhatsApp before you quote the client.

Alternatives when factory MTM is the wrong tool

Local make for one urgent VIP, graded bulk for identical staff uniforms, or a sealed house block with no per-client experiment — each is a valid path. The wrong tool is insisting on factory MTM when measurements will never be reliable and the event date cannot move.
