Quick answer: A thread shank is a short stem of wrapped thread between a sew-through button and the cloth, so the button sits slightly above the front and the buttonhole side lies flat around it when the jacket or coat is fastened. Write which buttons get a shank and how tall it should be relative to the layers it closes over, ask for the shank to be wrapped, and fasten every closing button on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the button list and the cloth reference on WhatsApp.
Clients rarely talk about shanks. They talk about a jacket that puckers around the button when it is closed, a coat button that is hard to push through, or a button that hangs by a thread after a season. All three usually trace back to how the button was sewn on. A sew-through button needs room under it for the cloth on the buttonhole side. The thread shank makes that room, and it is a line worth writing.
What is a button shank, and why does a suit need one?
A shank is whatever holds the button away from the cloth. Some buttons have their own shank, a loop moulded or fixed to the back. Most suit buttons are sew-through, with holes, and the shank is made from thread: the button is sewn with a little slack, then the thread is wound tightly round the stitches underneath to form a firm stem. When the jacket is fastened, the buttonhole side sits around that stem instead of being pinched against the button. Without it the front pulls and puckers at the button, and the stitches wear faster.
Button by button
Jacket front, closing: a wrapped thread shank — height to suit the cloth and the front layers.
Overcoat front, closing: a taller wrapped thread shank — thick cloth on the buttonhole side.
Double-breasted inside button: a thread shank — it holds the underlap.
Waistcoat front: a short thread shank — thin layers.
Working cuff: a short thread shank — it lets the cuff open and close.
Non-working sleeve buttons: little or no shank — decorative, sewn close.
Trouser waistband and fly: a short shank or sewn close — often under a belt or waistband.
Shank button with a moulded loop: no thread shank — sewn through the loop.
How tall should the shank be?
About as tall as the layers on the buttonhole side are thick: the cloth, the facing and the canvas or interlining. A light summer jacket needs a short shank; a heavy overcoat needs a much taller one. Too short and the front puckers; too long and the button droops and flops forward. Write it in words on the order, such as "shank to suit the front thickness", and judge it on the sample with the jacket fastened.
Sewing lines
Thread: strong button thread; colour matched to the button or the cloth.
Pattern: for four-hole buttons, parallel bars or a cross, written per style and kept the same across the garment.
Wrap: shank wrapped tightly and finished underneath so it does not unwind.
Backing: on coats and heavy fronts, a small backing button or reinforcement on the inside, if you want it.
Spares: spare buttons with each suit; see spare buttons.
Button material, size and buttonholes sit in the button and buttonhole specs, sleeve layout in sleeve button count, and how sturdy a plastic button must be in the button impact test.
A worked note
"Brand ref A-12. Sew-through horn-look buttons. Jacket front and inside button: wrapped thread shank to suit the front thickness. Working cuffs: short wrapped shank. Non-working sleeve buttons sewn close. Parallel-bar stitch on all four-hole buttons. Thread colour matched to the button. Two spare buttons in a bag on the inside pocket."
At the sample
Fasten each closing button: does the buttonhole side lie flat, with no pucker?
Look from the side: does the button sit level, or droop forward?
Pull each button gently: firm, with the shank tight?
Check the stitch pattern: the same on every four-hole button?
Photograph the fastened front and the shank from the side; write corrections in words.
