Lapped Seam or Plain Seam? Specify the Jacket Join, Not Just the Stitch

A line of stitching on a jacket photograph does not tell a cutter how the cloth underneath is joined. For an overseas custom shop or private-label brand, that distinction matters before the sample is approved: an overlapping edge, a plain join pressed open and a decorative stitch can look similar from a distance but describe different work.

Use “lapped seam” to describe the relationship of the fabric edges, not as a synonym for visible topstitching. Send a section sketch and a close photograph of the desired face and reverse. This guide turns that distinction into a seam-specific approval note, rather than another general jacket quality checklist.

## What changes when the seam is lapped?

A lapped seam joins material with edges overlapping, which may be plain or folded. A conventional plain seam starts with the fabric faces together, leaving seam allowances inside. These are different arrangements of the cloth. The [technical seam classification reference](https://www.coats.com/en-us/info-hub/seam-types/) separates seam arrangement from stitch selection and also distinguishes bound edges from lapped joins.

That is the useful distinction for the buyer. “Topstitched” describes a visible sewing operation. It does not, by itself, tell the workshop whether the cloth has been overlapped, folded around another edge, or joined conventionally and then stitched down. Conversely, saying “lapped” does not settle the thread appearance, the direction of the overlap or the treatment of the exposed edge.

Do not ask a factory to infer those decisions from the seam name. Ask for the intended arrangement to be shown on the sample or on a small representative seam piece before treating the wording as approved.

## A section sketch answers what a face photograph cannot

Imagine a shop developing a softly tailored odd jacket. The reference image shows a raised line along a panel join. The shop likes the line but has not decided whether an edge should be visible. The useful next step is not to copy the photograph caption into the order. It is to draw the layers from the end of the seam and identify which cloth lies over which.

This is a proposed briefing exercise, not an account of a completed customer order. Label the garment face, the inner face, the fold if present, and the visible stitching. Ask the workshop to return its interpretation. If the returned sketch shows a conventional seam with decorative stitching, the difference is discovered while it is still a discussion.

- **Decision on the sketch:** Relationship of the panels · **What the buyer should mark:** Overlapped or conventionally joined · **Evidence to request:** Section view of the proposed seam

- **Decision on the sketch:** Direction · **What the buyer should mark:** Which panel lies over the other · **Evidence to request:** Labelled garment drawing

- **Decision on the sketch:** Edge treatment · **What the buyer should mark:** Folded, enclosed or another agreed finish · **Evidence to request:** Reverse-side photograph

- **Decision on the sketch:** Stitch appearance · **What the buyer should mark:** Visible or discreet; thread colour reference · **Evidence to request:** Face-side seam sample

- **Decision on the sketch:** Extent · **What the buyer should mark:** Named panel joins, with start and end points · **Evidence to request:** Marked style drawing

- **Decision on the sketch:** Intersections · **What the buyer should mark:** How the join meets a pocket, vent or hem · **Evidence to request:** Close view of the junction

This table is a specification aid. It is not a declaration that every seam arrangement is available for every cloth or style. Feasibility and the finished appearance need confirmation on the order thread.

## Do not turn a visual choice into a strength claim

A prominent seam can look robust without proving anything about its performance. The cloth, thread, stitch and construction all affect the result. Do not describe the chosen join as stronger, more durable or better for every jacket simply because it is visible.

If strength or slippage is a purchasing requirement, ask how that requirement will be assessed and what evidence applies to the actual cloth and seam. That is a separate question from approving its appearance. Equally, a neat face view does not establish that the inside edge is finished as intended. Keep the visual decision and the performance requirement in separate fields.

Avoid replacing a familiar seam with a new construction across an entire style before the representative junctions have been reviewed. A straight seam piece can explain the join; it does not show every pocket corner or curved section on the garment.

## Review the seam where it changes direction

For sample review, ask for the seam face, reverse and a junction with another component. State the point being checked in each view. Is the overlap consistent with the sketch? Is the thread discreet or deliberately contrasting? Does the treatment continue as intended into the hem, or does the sample switch to a different finish without a note?

Do not invent a tolerance from a photograph. Where a dimension matters, place the agreed dimension and measurement method in the order specification. Where a visual effect matters, retain the approved physical seam or clear reference image. The aim is a repeatable instruction, not an impressive adjective.

A useful approval note might read: “Panel join to follow the returned section sketch. Face and reverse as the reviewed seam piece. Thread colour to the approved reference. Pocket junction remains pending until the sample detail is reviewed.” This is illustrative wording, not a factory promise or a substitute for the order confirmation.

## Where this belongs in the jacket brief

Put the seam arrangement beside the named panel on the style drawing. Keep the seam note separate from any alteration allowance and from fabric performance requirements. The workshop should be able to find the approved appearance without searching through unrelated fit comments.

## Questions to settle before approval

**Is every topstitched seam a lapped seam?** No. Visible stitching does not establish how the underlying edges are arranged. Request a section view or a reverse-side image.

**Does a seam name settle the inside finish?** No. Write the edge treatment separately and check the reverse of the representative seam.

**Can a small seam piece replace the garment sample?** It can clarify the construction proposal. It does not establish how every curved section and component junction will look on the finished style.
