Engineering factories have a name for it: first article inspection, or FAI — checking the first part made on the production line against the drawing before making the rest. Apparel has the same idea under different names: first-off check, top-of-production sample, TOP. The point is identical. The first bulk garment tells you whether the run will match the sample, while there are still dozens of garments left to get right.
Most private-label suit brands check twice: at the sealed sample, and when the cartons arrive. The first-article check sits between them, at the point where a correction costs least.
Where it sits in the order
A new style's sample takes 7–14 days. Once sealed, and once size specs, cloth and construction are locked, production takes 14–21 days. Production days are not delivery days. A first-article check happens early in that production window, on the first garment cut from bulk cloth and made on the bulk line.
It matters most for bulk from 50 per style, where one error repeats across the run. An MTM from 1 order is its own first article; the single garment is checked against its own order form.
Sample, size set, first article, final check
Sealed sample: the approved design, cloth, construction and fit — before the lock.
Size set: the grade across sizes — before or around the lock, when asked for.
First article: the first bulk garment against the sealed sample — early in production.
Pre-dispatch check: a sample of finished bulk against the order — before packing is closed.
Size sets are covered in size set sample before bulk from 50 and the final check in QC inspection before bulk.
A first-article check sheet for a suit
Cloth: against the sealed sample, side by side in daylight; photo of both together.
Measurements: against the size spec for that size; measured value next to spec.
Front construction: against the sealed sample; note or photo.
Lapel, pockets, vents: against the sealed sample; photo of each.
Buttons and buttonholes: against the trim card; photo.
Lining and sleeve lining: against the trim card; photo.
Labels: against approved label files; photo of each label in place.
Trouser waistband and hem: against the sealed sample and spec; photo, inside and out.
Pressing: against the sealed sample; front and back photo on a hanger.
Doing it remotely
An overseas brand rarely stands at the line. A remote first-article check is a photo set and a measurement list on the order thread. Whether a first-article photo set is sent for your order, and in what form, is confirmed in writing on the thread when the order is placed — ask before the lock, not after. Photo requests during production are covered in asking for QC photos during bulk.
A worked example: one label, fifty suits
A brand's first-article photos show the care label sewn into the left inside seam; the sealed sample has it on the right. The brand flags it the same day. One garment is corrected; the other forty-nine are made right. Found at the warehouse, the same issue would have been fifty unpicked labels or a run sold with a mismatch.
Rules that keep the check useful
Agree the points before production. The sheet above, adjusted to your style, goes on the order.
Reply fast. A first-article check that waits a week for an answer protects nothing. Name one approver.
Judge against the sealed sample, not memory. If it is not on the sample or the spec, it is not a defect.
Put it on your T&A. It is a milestone with an owner — see the time and action calendar.

WhatsApp +65 8013 8838.
Does a first-article check delay production? Not if the reply is quick. Agree the points and the approver before the lock.
Is it the same as a size set? No. A size set checks the grade before bulk; a first article checks the first bulk garment.
Should MTM orders have one? An MTM from 1 garment is checked against its own order form; the bulk first-article routine is for runs from 50 per style.
