Selling Suits in Canada: CA Identification Number or Dealer Address on the Label?
Either one works. The Competition Bureau of Canada says every textile label must show the dealer's company name and mailing address, or a CA Identification Number: the letters CA followed by five digits, for example CA00000 (Competition Bureau: dealer information). The number belongs to a Canadian dealer. A factory abroad does not hold it for you.
Who can get a CA Identification Number?
The Bureau lists four groups as eligible:
- Canadian manufacturers of a textile fibre product
- Canadian processors of a textile fibre product
- Canadian finishers of a textile fibre product
- Canadians in the business of importing or selling any textile fibre product
If you are not eligible, your company name and mailing address go on the label instead. The Bureau also says the dealer identification and the country of origin (where required) do not have to be bilingual.
Do made-to-measure suits need a sewn-in dealer label?
Not always. The Bureau's reminder says that for custom-made items such as draperies, furniture or suits, the fibre content and dealer information may be shown on the invoice, bill of sale or other document instead of on the item. This applies when properly labelled samples or swatches are available for the consumer to examine before purchase.
| Order type | Where the dealer info can go (per the Bureau) | What to send the factory |
|---|---|---|
| MTM custom-made suit | On the invoice, bill of sale or other document, if properly labelled swatches are available before purchase | Your house label artwork; tell us whether a dealer label is also wanted |
| Bulk private-label run | On the textile label: company name and mailing address, or CA number | Final label text with the CA number or address |
| Either | Dealer ID and country of origin need not be bilingual | Language layout for the rest of the label from your adviser |

What should a Canadian shop send before the sample?
- The exact dealer line: your CA number, or your company name and mailing address as Canada Post formats it
- Fibre content wording for each style, from the mill's statement
- For MTM: whether this information goes on a sewn-in label or on your invoice, backed by labelled swatches in store
- Country-of-origin wording, if your adviser says it is required for the product
"MTM starts from 1 piece and bulk OEM from 50. Send the exact label text, with your CA number or your Canadian name and address, together with the artwork before the 7–14 day sample." — Shi Yuan Suit Factory (statement built from published factory policy)
FAQ
What is a CA Identification Number on a clothing label?
A five-digit number preceded by the letters CA (for example CA00000). Under Competition Bureau guidance it can be used on Canadian textile labels in place of the dealer's name and mailing address.
Can a factory outside Canada get a CA number for my label?
The Competition Bureau limits eligibility to Canadian manufacturers, processors and finishers of textile fibre products, and Canadians importing or selling them. Otherwise, the company name and mailing address go on the label.
Do custom-made suits sold in Canada need dealer information sewn in?
The Bureau says that for custom-made items such as suits, fibre content and dealer information may appear on the invoice, bill of sale or other document, if properly labelled samples or swatches are available for the consumer before purchase.
