A brand compares two suit factories on their quotes, picks the lower one, and finds the suits cost more on the rail than planned. The quote was never the whole number. What matters for margin is landed cost: what a suit costs once it is in your warehouse, cleared and ready to sell.
The formula is simple. The work is knowing who supplies each input — and not asking the factory for numbers it cannot honestly give.
The formula
Landed cost per suit = (factory goods total + freight + insurance + duty + import charges + inbound handling) ÷ number of suits
Each term is a total for the shipment; dividing at the end gives a per-suit figure.

Input Who supplies it What they need from you Factory goods total The factory's written quote Your brief: cloth, construction, details, labels, packing, track Carton count, weights, dimensions The factory, at packing The packing method and pieces per carton Freight Your forwarder Carton data, origin, destination, mode Insurance Your forwarder or insurer Goods value and route Duty Your customs broker Product classification and origin Import charges Your broker Market-specific fees and taxes Inbound handling Your warehouse Cartons, unpacking, tagging
Same table as a list
Factory goods total: from the factory's written quote; needs your full brief.
Carton count, weights, dimensions: from the factory at packing; needs the packing method and pieces per carton.
Freight: from your forwarder; needs carton data, origin, destination and mode.
Insurance: from your forwarder or insurer; needs goods value and route.
Duty: from your customs broker; needs product classification and origin.
Import charges: from your broker; market-specific.
Inbound handling: from your warehouse; cartons, unpacking, tagging.
Duty rates and import charges vary by market and change; we do not quote them. Product classification for suits is introduced in HTS 6203 suit definition, and how shipping terms change who pays which leg is in Incoterms for China suit shipments. What moves the factory line itself is in the eight quote drivers.
A worked example with letters, not prices
A brand imports one bulk style of 60 suits.
Factory goods total = G
Freight = F, insurance = I (forwarder)
Duty = D, import charges = C (broker)
Inbound handling = H (warehouse)
Landed cost per suit = (G + F + I + D + C + H) ÷ 60.
The same brand ordering a single MTM from 1 suit for a client runs the same formula with a divisor of 1 — which is why courier freight and import charges weigh more heavily on a single garment than on a bulk run from 50.
Timing is a cost too
Production takes 14–21 days after measurements or size specs, cloth and construction are locked; a new style's sample takes 7–14 days before that. Production days are not delivery days. Money spent on goods sits on the journey before it can be sold, so a brand comparing a cheaper but slower route should count the weeks as well as the freight line.
Bulk programmes are on our private label suit manufacturer page; the order steps through packing are on our process page. Ask for a written quote and carton estimate on WhatsApp +65 8013 8838 so your forwarder can price the rest.
FAQ
What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. WhatsApp +65 8013 8838.
Can the factory estimate duty for me? No. Duty depends on your market, classification and origin rules; your customs broker confirms it.
When do I get real carton weights? At packing. Before that, ask for an estimate and treat it as one.
Should samples be in the landed cost? Track sample costs separately; they belong to developing the style, not to each bulk suit.
