ISO 12947-2 Martindale Abrasion: Wear Specs Distinct from Pilling for Suit Cloth

Abrasion breakdown and pilling are different tests. ISO 12947-2:2016 is Textiles — Determination of the abrasion resistance of fabrics by the Martindale method — Part 2: Determination of specimen breakdown. ISO lists Edition 2 (2016-12), confirmed 2023, 15 pages. The end-point is determined by inspection at fixed intervals. It applies to textile fabrics including nonwovens, except fabrics with a low abrasion wear life that are covered by other methods, and it is not applicable to coated fabrics. Do not reuse a pilling grade (ISO 12945-2) as if it were an abrasion breakdown result.

How is ISO 12947-2 different from pilling (ISO 12945-2)?

A boutique that asks for “Martindale” without Part 2 vs pilling Part wording leaves the mill free to send whichever report is already on file. Write 12947-2 when you mean specimen breakdown under abrasion.

What belongs in the cloth brief?

  • Method: ISO 12947-2:2016 (Edition 2)
  • End-point definition: specimen breakdown by inspection at fixed intervals
  • Target cycles or acceptance rule your program uses (buyer-owned number)
  • Confirmation the cloth is not coated/laminated (out of scope)
  • Lot / piece number

This post does not restate pilling procedures; those belong under ISO 12945-2.

How does abrasion fit sample approval?

Collect the mill’s ISO 12947-2 report before sealing the 7–14 day sample. Bulk OEM from 50 should cut from a matching lot. Construction (fused / half canvas / full canvas) does not replace a cloth abrasion figure — it sits beside it.

"We cut bulk OEM from 50 only after the 7–14 day sample is approved in writing. Put ISO 12947-2 abrasion (not a pilling grade) on the cloth brief before that sample is sealed." — Shi Yuan Suit Factory (statement built from published factory policy)

FAQ

What does ISO 12947-2 measure?

Does ISO 12947-2 apply to coated suit cloth?

No. ISO states the method is not applicable to coated fabrics.

Is Martindale abrasion the same as pilling?
