ASTM D5034 Grab Tensile: Breaking Strength on a Suit Cloth Mill Brief
Breaking strength without a method name is an argument waiting to happen. ASTM D5034 Standard Test Method for Breaking Strength and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Grab Test) covers the grab and modified grab procedures for most woven, nonwoven, and felted fabrics. It is not recommended for knitted fabrics with high stretch (more than 11%). Grab results reflect yarn strength plus fabric assistance from adjacent yarns — they are not a direct yarn-strength substitute. Name D5034 (and grab vs modified grab) on the mill brief before Shi Yuan’s 7–14 day sample.
Mill-brief lines that prevent strip/grab confusion
| Brief line | What to write | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Method | ASTM D5034 (state year/reapproval, e.g. D5034-21(2025)) | Names grab tensile family |
| Procedure | Grab or modified grab | Modified grab is used when raveled strips unravel further |
| Direction | Warp and filling (or machine/cross) as required | Two directions; do not omit |
| Condition | Conditioned or wet as agreed | Method allows both |
| Not this method | Do not use D5034 for high-stretch knits (>11%) | ASTM scope exclusion |
| Lot link | Mill lot / piece ID | Ties sealed sample to the report |

Factory attach point
Shi Yuan does not replace the mill’s D5034 report. Attach it before sample cut. After seal, bulk from 50 or MTM from 1 on the same cloth rules should cite the same method. Production 14–21 days after approval; production ≠ delivery. "Name ASTM D5034 grab vs modified grab on the mill brief before the 7–14 day sample. Bulk from 50 after seal should cite the same lot’s grab method — not a verbal pound claim." — Shi Yuan Suit Factory (statement built from published factory policy)
FAQ
What does ASTM D5034 measure?
Breaking strength and elongation of most textile fabrics using grab or modified grab procedures. See ASTM’s D5034 standard page.
Why not use D5034 on high-stretch knits?
ASTM states the method is not recommended for knitted fabrics and other textiles with stretch more than 11%.
When should the D5034 report reach Shi Yuan?
With the cloth indent, before sample cut, so sealed sample and bulk from 50 share the same named grab method.
